20 Fall 2017 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk Some of our canned favorites include strawberr y rhubarb jam, dilly beans, pickled mixed vegetables, spiced apples, salsa, and spaghetti sauce, but the possibilities are virtually endless. Using your imagination, or in my case, my appetite, is best. By fall, after months of preparation, hard work, and dil- igence, our root cellar will be full of food, our gardens prepped for winter, and our woodshed will again be getting filled to the brim with good, dr y, wood. We will be ready to bunker down for the long winter months that are fast ap- proaching. Then the cycle will repeat itself next year. Homesteading is not for ever yone but if you have the desire and the garden space, it is a lifestyle that is deeply rewarding. For my husband and I, as well as our dog King, homesteading means spending lots of time investing in our- selves, our health, and our future. "Locally grown" doesn't get any more local than your own backyard.
