McCabe understands the challenges faced by the caretak-
ers. "I can't say enough about the people I super vise. All ex-
cellent personnel. They're like my brothers and my children.
To be a caretaker, it's a rare breed. In the winter time, you
have to love the solitude, and in the summer, you have to like
dealing with a lot of people. Their professionalism is phe-
nomenal."
In 1998, when Phil came upon the fire at the Colden out-
post, his stomach dropped. He feared it might not be rebuilt.
Thankfully, through the teamwork of many, it was advocated
for and has provided a tremendous ser vice to the backcoun-
tr y. For those of us who venture into the unpredictable forc-
es of nature, it is reassuring to know a caretaker is on duty.
