Fall 2017 LOCALadk Magazine 5 LOCALadk Message From The Editor Mist is on the lakes in the morning, the mosquitos are finally fading away, and my down vest is always close by; change is happening. Fall is here and it will bring people into the park to enjoy the amazing transformation provid- ed by nature. From the lush deep green of summer to the bright orange, red, and yellow of fall, the Adirondacks once again change from one gorgeous season to another. We are happy to bring you our Fall 2017 issue. We have filled the pages with stories and photos for both locals and visitors to enjoy. We will bring you up in the air in our piece on the Adirondack Balloon Festival held in Glens Falls. We hiked the trail to Lake Colden to meet with the interior caretakers and introduce the role and histor y of the caretakers cabin. We asked a local homesteader to share the stor y of her quest to live off the land. We hope to inspire some to tr y the sport of rock climbing. We map out a route that is perfect for those who love to motor- cycle and are looking for a great fall ride. We get you to the edge of your seat in our Epic Journey section when we join two local brothers on their quest to summit Mount Olympus. We tempt your palate with delicious recipes and restaurant suggestions. Our young writer for this issue makes us smile with his account of being an actor this summer with the local theatre company. We encourage you to visit a few local farms and partake in a cheese tour through beautiful Essex County. As always we aim to bring you interesting stories, amazing photography, engaging advertising, an inspiring dog, a worthy organization to support, and smiles as you enjoy your free copy of LOC ALadk. We hope you enjoy the fall season and take advantage of the many great events and happenings going on throughout the park. We invite and encourage you to share your thoughts and feedback on the magazine. We are relying on you, the reader, to help us make this publication the best it can be. Letters to the Editor always welcome. The Fall issue Keeping It LOC AL campaign will be donating to the Climb It 4 Climate project. This is a climate change awareness project and fundraiser for Paul Smith's College student scholarships and sustainability pro- gramming at Osgood Farm. Hike between September 9-24 and help them reach their goal of 200 summits. "Ever y mile hiked and mountain climbed is an inspiration and a reminder of what we can do with our human energy." - Bethany Garretson, project founder and leader. Visit http://www.paulsmiths.edu/climb-it- 4-climate/ to learn how you can help and be part of the project. Happy fall, Anne Brewer Editor
