16 Winter 2017 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk What To Do When You Are Lost In The Woods A Message from the New York State DEC The increase in people enjoying the Adirondack backcountry has led to an increase in the number of people lost or injured. Some people who have been lost have done a better job than others of ensuring that the incident isn't a traumatic experi- ence, and that they are easily found. The best way of course to avoid the trauma of being lost is to prevent it from happening in the first place. To avoid becoming lost: • Study the trail or trails you plan to hike, and the surrounding terrain. • Carry a map and a compass. Know how to use them. Check your map regularly and identify your current location. • If you use a GPS, still carry a map and compass for back-up. GPS systems aren't reliable in heavily forested areas, and their batteries can die. But in the event you do end up lost, here are some tips that will ensure the situation is resolved as quickly as possible and with the least possible suffering: Be prepared. Always (even on day hikes) wear, pack, or carry all of the following in preparation of spending an unexpected night in the woods: • Extra clothing, food, and water • Bivy sack to provide warmth and shelter from the elements • Headlamp or flashlight and extra batteries • A whistle (More on this later.) • Cell phone (Remember, cell phone coverage in the backcountry can be spotty or non-existent. Turn your cell phone off while hiking to conserve your batteries.) • A watch or other timekeeper (Know what time the sun sets and keep aware of the time.) • Waterproof matches and fire starter material (Know how to make a campfire!) • Leave an itinerary of your hike, including your planned hiking route and an expected time of return, with a family member or friend. Also provide the with instructions to contact the DEC Dispatch at 518-891-0235 if you are overdue. • Check the weather forecast before you leave, and plan accordingly. Zaneta Hough
