Winter 2017 LOCALadk Magazine 61 LOCALadk I love winter in the Adirondacks because it allows me look at ever ything from a new perspective, and to challenge myself in new ways. There is so much to love about winter. I could go on forever, but I especially love the undercast experience, in winter. It's a pretty special feeling when you're above the clouds, looking at mountaintop islands in the sky. Watching the sunrise or sunset in the winter is ver y enjoyable, too. The mountains, and ever ything around you, glow with color. Winter in the Adirondacks is an amaz- ing time of year – one of my favorites! My favorite part about winter in the Adirondacks is the peacefulness in the woods, compared to the summer hustle and bustle. It's nice to get out in the backcountr y and have the feeling of being one of the only people out on the trail. Winter hiking in the Adirondacks requires a whole new set of skills and mindset, and it is challenging and rewarding at the same time. It's truly my favorite time of year to be in the backcountr y. Winter is just so peaceful and ever ything looks so different. Also, there are fewer people on the trails and the people you do meet, you just know are cool people or they wouldn't be out hiking in the Adirondacks in winter. I also love seeing all the animal tracks in the snow. You don't always see a lot of wildlife in the woods and it's easy to forget they are there. But seeing the tracks is a reminder that you aren't alone in the forest. In winter, ever y hike takes a little more planning than it does in the warmer months. And you typically see fewer people out there. It's truly extraordinar y to see these mountains covered in snow. The trails are rugged, but reaching the summit of any mountain is that much more fulfilling.
