64 Winter 2017 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk I was born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden. I moved to the United States when I was 17 years old to attend prep school in Lake Placid, New York. My dad went to college here in the U.S. and it was a dream of mine to come to America and attend college. My parents and I figured prep school would be the best way for me to get ready for that. Now, I'm a senior at SUNY Canton and I play for the men's hockey team. Ever since I can remember I have loved hockey. I started playing when I was five years old. My dad used to take me to the hometown pro team and it was my favorite thing. My best friend also played and I begged my parents to let me start. That was when my parents finally brought me to my home rink and I laced up for the first time. Here we are, 19 years later, and I still love hockey. As much as I love to play hockey in an official rink, there's something truly special about playing outside on a frozen pond or lake. If you have ever done so, you know exactly what I'm talking about; anyone could back me up on this. There's something about the cold breeze whispering over your face, the cold Adirondack air watering your eyes until a single tear rolls down your cheek, the frosty air creeping into your lungs, and the car ving sound only a skate makes when you stride down a lake. The ice looks like straight glass and it's the most perfect thing you have ever seen. When we play on a lake, nets are made up of anything you can get your hands on. The stands are the mountains and trees. The mountains look like they are painted on a canvas. It's breathtaking. All the worries and problems of the world disappear with the wind and you become one with the ice. You never feel more home than at that exact moment.
