Atlantic Salm
(SALMO SALAR)
The landlocked Atlantic salmon found in the Adirondacks are the same species as
those found in the ocean, but they live in fresh water their entire lives. At about
3 years old, the dark brown fish turn silver and move downstream to a large lake,
like Schroon or Champlain, where they begin to rapidly grow. Salmon remain in
rivers from mid-April to late May, but the best window for fishing is from late April
to mid-May.

The official fish of New York state, brook trout are as Adirondack as it gets. Seriously, there are
some streams in these mountains that contain strains of the species that can't be found anywhere
else on earth. Smaller brookies are numerous in streams throughout the Adirondacks, while the
larger 3-pound specimens can be found in more than 500 ponds here.
