Some of the best painting locations are just a short distance from the parking area, and spectators are welcome. Wednesday August 15 the artists are free to choose paint- ing locations from the list provided, which includes places like Norman Ridge, the Saranac and Au Sable Rivers, and the Loj Road, outside of Lake Placid. Thursday August 16 is Paint the Town day and the artists will all be painting at various locations in the Village of Sa- ranac Lake. Watch for easels set up in the parks, along the River walk, Lake Flower, and sidewalks. Each artist is asked to donate a small painting for the "Paint the Town" silent auc- tion, which will be set up in the Adirondack Artists Guild Gal- ler y at 4pm. Part of the proceeds of the auction, which will close Saturday at 4pm, will be donated to the Saranac Lake Central School art program. Thursday is also a 3rd Thursday ArtWalk, so the downtown will be packed with other art- ists, craftspeople, and musicians from 5 to 7:30pm. At the Hotel Saranac, the winner of the Nocturne Contest will be announced at 7:30pm. On Friday morning, August 17, artists are invited to paint along the Saranac River, meeting at the Fish & Game Club on the Bloomingdale Road. All of their framed paintings are due in the Town Hall at 2pm, where they will be judged by nation- ally known artist Joe Gyurcsak. The culmination of the Adirondack Plein Air Festival is the Show & Sale set up in the Harrietstown Town Hall. Most of the participating artists will produce two to four paint- ings a day, or more, so there is potential to have 500 to 600 fresh, wet paintings on display, all having been produced at the event. The Show opens with the Special Preview Party on Friday evening at 6pm. Tickets may be purchased in ad- vance from SaranacLakeArtWorks.com or at the door. $5000 in awards will be presented at 8 pm. There's one more exciting painting event on Saturday morning, Aug 18. It's called a Quick Draw Competition and the artists who sign up for it will have two hours, from 9 to 11am, to set up somewhere in the downtown area and pro- duce a painting. At 11, they will bring their paintings and ea- sels to the sidewalk outside of the Town Hall where they will be judged and a prize awarded. The Show & Sale opens to the public at noon on Saturday. There is no charge. Whether a local, a visitor, or a seasonal home owner, this is a wonderful opportunity to see how an artist interprets the landscapes of the Adirondack region. Keep your eyes open for the other plein air events that occur in the Adirondacks. Keeseville hosts a Festival June 20 -24, with a focus on Au Sable Chasm, the historic buildings in the community, and the surrounding farms.
