Anne Brewer 20 International Children's Winter Games: Lake Placid is proud to be hosting the International Children's Win- ter Games this January. Athletes from around the world will be com- peting in a variety of winter sports. An opportunity for the children to have a rich cultural experience will be created through games, free time, and entertainment. Friendships will be forged across the globe, all while enjoying the beauty of Lake Placid and surrounding area. 22 Road Salt: The Acid Rain of our time: Studies being conducted by the Adirondack Watershed Institute and Ausable River Association on a sample of the lakes and water sources in the Adirondacks are showing very high levels of sodium chloride, or road salt. In this article they share some of the reasons why, their results, and a few steps being taken to lessen the amount of salt used. 26 Valcour Crossing: Things have to be just right, but when they are, XC-skiing on the frozen lakes of the Adirondacks can be pure bliss. Valcour Island on Lake Champlain makes for the perfect destination. Conditions vary, so make sure the ice is safe, carry safety gear, and we recommend not going alone. 28 ADK Ice: Climbers were happy for the early ice this winter. Bowls are becoming more and more popular now and we are excited to share some creative recipes for making the perfect meal. What a great way to finish off a wintry day. 40 Epic Journey: Kenya: Kenya and its National Parks are teeming with wildlife, and local photographer Alex Zhang and his 12-year old daughter Chloe take us there through their lenses.
