Good Husbandry: Growing Food, Love, and Family on Essex Farm by Kristin Kimball In this memoir Kristin shares personal stories of falling in love, life on the farm, raising a family, and taking a risk. She does all of this through humor, honesty, and hard work. Life on the farm can have a mind of its own, and Kristin and her husband, Mark, have endured the many hardships farms face. Weather is an ever yday worr y, but with each other, their kids, and the amazing crew they employ at the farm helps to make those times sur vivable. This book will have you craving fresh veggies, and hope- fully better appreciating the blood, sweat, and tears that go into farming. We have much respect for Kirstin and her family as well as the whole team behind the Essex Farm. The Great Snowy Owl Caper by Mark Manske I originally met Mark Manske while he was giving a talk on raptors at Great Camp Sagamore. I heard his thunderous laugh first, then I saw him with his owl Morley. I was drawn to the talk because I could easily hear the passion in his voice and the adoration for the raptors in his words. He was so ex- cited and was telling such funny and interesting stories. The added fact that he had a bird of prey on his arm while talking made it near impossible not to stop and listen. Mark was a science teacher for 17 years in Brasher Falls Central School before retiring and starting Adirondack Raptors, Inc. The stor y itself follows main character Mar vin Stone, who is a biologist, and his friend Bill Short as they tr y to capture a snowy owl. The traditional traps are not working so the two have to create a new plan. You will have to read the stor y to learn why Mar vin buries himself completely in the snow and how it may help capture the owl. Manske's second novel is due out this month and follows Stone and Short on another adventure. Chasing the Ghost of an Adirondack Elephant.
