LOCALadk | Opener Where's Gary & A Letter from the Editor "Where's Gary?" Photo Contest W e're going to have some fun with LOCALadk and here's something to get us started. Welcome to the "Where's Gary?" photo contest of the quarter. As you can probably tell already, we place a high value on quality photography, and if we have our way, you're going to see lots of it in the magazine. This photo was taken in the hot summer of 2012, at the Jay Rocks swimming hole, in Jay, N.Y. I turned around, and this beautiful bird was standing in the cool water, just a few yards away. It was a chance shot, with a not-so-great little camera, that happened to turn out OK. But look closely in the background, and you'll see something else. He'll be in some photo, somewhere, in every quarterly issue of LOCALadk Magazine we publish. His name is Gary, and he's a Dachshund puppy with a little white belly. Go ahead and laugh! Once you see him, it's hard to miss him. But you'll need to look closely for him. We've made him fairly easy to find in this First Issue, but he could be anywhere in the future. Once you find Gary, just go to our website, www.LOCALadk.com, and view the digital version of the magazine. We use the industry leader in digital magazine page-turn technology, so it's easy and fun. Flip through the digital pages to where Gary is and click on him! You'll be directed to a web page on our site, where you'll be able to read all about the contest and enter if you choose. Have fun! I Anne, I've got an idea... feel like something's missing. I think we need a new publication about the Adirondacks that speaks to our generation and demographic I think the entire area is ready for something fresh. Let's start up a new magazine. I know it's a difficult thing to do, but the area needs it. We hear it every day. All you have to do is listen. We know the region has always had its fair share of economic challenges, and relies heavily on tourism to survive. Let's be honest, it's going to make this project even more challenging. And I say let's do it anyway. Let's do it in a way that's different and let's do it right. We've both been in this business for a long time, and we know what needs to be done. Let's have fun, and make sure we enjoy our work. Let's understand form the very beginning we're not going to make a lot of money doing this; and accept it. Let's take in it's place, the satisfaction that comes with producing something of quality, and having the opportunity to live and work and play in such an amazingly beautiful and vibrant region of the U.S. Let's create a publication that helps all who participate, live and thrive in the Adirondacks. Let's have stunning photographic content alongside well written, in depth editorial, all from local contributors; people who live inside the Adirondack park. Let's make sure we deliver high quality content, that helps our readers feel like reading again! Let's have our feature articles read straight through without distraction. Let's make the magazine advertiser supported, and do that differently too. We know that to be successful, we're really going to have to raise the bar and set some lofty goals. So let's challenge our advertisers to do the same. Let's challenge them to develop fresh, modern, and even entertaining advertising that engages our readers and doesn't bore them. Let's challenge them to create advertising that people will read! Let's reject advertising that is old, outdated, ineffective and overall distracting to our readers. We owe it to our advertisers to help them grow and develop as well, so let's help them create ad copy that delivers a fresh new message. (Many of the ads you see in this First Issue have been created by the team at LOCALadk Magazine) Let's also have some fun and let readers vote for their favorite ads! This magazine will be different. Let's begin to help change the way advertisers engage our readers and reach their LOCALadk Magazine Spring 2013 5
