LOCALadk | Opener Call our number, and we'll certainly get back to you. But If you call and we don't pick up, know that we are out in the Adirondacks doing our job for our readers and advertisers. We work very hard, and leverage technology to help us accomplish our goals. By our definition, technology is that which makes our lives easier, more streamlined, and more productive by utilization of some electronic means. Phone and text messaging do not fit into this category. By operating in this way, we have developed a massively productive and streamlined workflow that enables us to produce this magazine; and we have only just scratched the surface. In producing this issue alone, we have worked seamlessly with Local Adirondack'ers traveling as far away as Hawaii and Austria. We don't rely on mobile connectivity either. I, for one do not own a cell phone and often joke, "if the phone doesn't ring it's me." I'm sure all of you Jimmy Buffet fans will recognize the line. This forces us to work in a more efficient way and not waste time on minutiae. Why be so strict with all of this? Because selfishly, we need time to do all of those things which help produce a magazine you want to read. Experiences, great content, stunning photographs and a high quality finished product do not happen strapped into a cubicle. Our ability to work in this way is one of our greatest strengths. Let's target a new, growing demographic trend; one that we, as publishers and editors, are part of and know very well. Ours is a demographic that's eager to go out and do things, not just read about them. A demographic that at its core is between 35 and 55 years old, educated, may be married, has a family, and is hungry for new experiences, in everything from food to sport. Let's Zig when everyone else Zags. It's usually good advice. Following the crowd, doing business in the usual and customary ways, only sets you up in line for repeating past mistakes. Ultimately, this leads to failure at worst, and mediocre performance at best. Sure we have to break even, pay bills, vendors, printers, and contributors. But our business philosophy extends far beyond a typical small-business Monday morning meeting, during which we discuss the dead-end question, "how much can we make?" and "what's the competition doing this month?" None of that really matters. And one more thing, Anne, let's give the magazine away for free. Done. - Scott LOCALadk Magazine is a free publication, with content and photography to rival the best of paid distributions. It's available complentary at any of our advertisers stores and shops, as well as many other fine locations throughout the Adirondacks. You can also support LOCALadk Magazine by purchasing a subscription for only $25 a year, and we'll mail you a copy.
