LOCALadk | Who's Who In This Issue 18 LOCALadk Magazine Summer 2013 HELEN ANNE Johnathan Esper is an Adirondack native and full time outdoor photographer. He specializes in panoramic landscape photography, especially of the Adirondack region, Iceland, the aurora borealis, and panoramic adventure photography for stock uses. Johnathan also leads photography tours, workshops, and personal outings in the Adirondack region and is a staff instructor with the Adirondack Photography Institute. He spends part of each year leading international photo tours to Iceland and New Zealand. He is currently involved in a long-term project of photographing panoramas from the tops of trees he ascends on forested hills, for new and unique views over the Adirondacks. He has also backpacked, skied, photographed, mountaineered, and travelled for years through some of our world's great wilderness landscapes and mountain regions, including Patagonia, New Zealand, Iceland, Tasmania, Scandinavia, Alaska, and the Andes and Himalaya mountain ranges. Johnathan is published frequently in all the Adirondack region's publications and around the world by myriad clients; he is also represented by Aurora Photos and Getty Images. Johnathan's photography website is www.wildernessphotographs. com. Helen Smith Cairns is Professor Emerita at the City University of New York (CUNY). She received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psycholinguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught for over thirty years at Queens College (in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Disorders) and the CUNY Graduate Center. Helen lives in Ray Brook with her husband Chuck and (seriously adorable) Shih Tzu Leander. Bethany Garretson graduated from Paul Smith's College in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in Nature and Culture. Born and raised in Cherry Valley, a small farming community near Cooperstown, NY, Bethany's first taste of the Adirondacks came from fishing trips with her grandparents. She and her husband live in Keene Valley and work as field instructors for Adirondack Leadership Expeditions, a local wilderness therapy program for teens. Bethany is an avid hiker—she's an (unofficial) 46'er and recently, along with her younger sister, became Saranac Lake Ultra 6'er numbers two and three. She loves using mountains as a tool to empower women. In college, she played basketball and soccer and enjoys any time spent playing either. Bethany loves trail running, biking, and swimming. When not moving her legs, she writes, paints, and crafts jewelry and baskets with natural materials such as birch bark, sinew, stones, and feathers. You'd recognize Bethany on trail by the mud "warpaint" she dons on her face, arms, and legs. BETHANY MATT Matt Young has called Lake Placid his home since 2004. He strives to achieve a balance between his passion for the outdoors and his treasured role as physical education teacher at Lake Placid Elementary School. When Matt is not teaching he can be found paddling, skiing, or riding his bike. He usually brings a camera with him and loves to write about his adventures when he returns home. Anne Brewer lives in Lake Clear with her fiancé, his daughter, and their dog Juni. She is an avid outdoor sports enthusiast, kayaker, hiker, skier and traveler. She has a passion for Central and South America and enjoys visiting places that are off the beaten path. Anne earned a degree in International Business and Communications from SUNY Brockport. In addition to being the Managing Editor for LOCALadk, Anne works as the Director of Sales for Mountain Communications radio, guides for Adventures in Good Company, and operates her own summer business; Placid Waters Kayaking. JONATHAN SCOTT Scott Mierop is a long-time Adirondack native, visiting since 1969 and living within the Blue Line for the past 14 years. After a long career in the corporate world of marketing and sales, he escaped. He's an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoys mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking and skiing, and has been an alpine ski racing coach. He's also been a pilot and loves to fly. He devotes the majority of his time to LOCALadk Magazine, and can often be seen with his black & tan Dachsund, Gary.
