LOCALadk | Fall into Winter Who's Who RORY RORY RIGGINS lives at the Keene Valley Hostel with his parents Robin and Jake and little sister Molly. He is a 14-yearold Freshman at Keene Central School. Rory started backcountry skiing on tele gear in 5th grade, and still enjoys it as much as when he started. Rory likes to spend time with his family and friends camping, hiking, mountain biking, paddling, ice climbing and of course backcountry skiing. 4 LOCALadk Magazine Fall into Winter 2013 HELEN ANNE LISA DENSMORE is a former U.S. Ski Team member and four-time World Masters Champion in alpine skiing. She is a native of Saranac Lake, New York who spent her formative years on the slopes of Whiteface Mountain. When she's not skiing as fast as possible, she writes about, photographs and films a myriad of outdoor activities. She is the author of seven books including Hiking the Adirondacks (Falcon Guides, 2010) and Best Easy Day Hikes Adirondacks (Falcon Guides, 2101). www.lisadensmore.com HELEN SMITH CAIRNS is Professor Emerita at the City University of New York (CUNY). She received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psycholinguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught for over thirty years at Queens College (in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Disorders) and the CUNY Graduate Center. She has authored or edited six books (with another in the works). Helen lives in Ray Brook with her husband Chuck and (seriously adorable) Shih Tzu Leander. BETHANY GARRETTSON graduated from Paul Smith's College with a bachelor's degree in Nature and Culture. Born and raised in Cherry Valley, a small farming community near Cooperstown, NY, Bethany's first taste of the Adirondacks came from fishing trips with her grandparents. She and her husband live in Keene Valley and work as field instructors for wilderness therapy programs. Bethany is an avid hiker and 46er. She loves using the outdoors and mountains to empower individuals. She is currently obtaining a Master's degree in Conservation and Community Development through Future Generation's Graduate School. Through her program, she has studied abroad in India and Namibia. BETHANY MATT MATT YOUNG has called Lake Placid his home since 2004. He strives to achieve a balance between his passion for the outdoors and his treasured role as physical education teacher at Lake Placid Elementary School. When Matt is not teaching, he can be found paddling, skiing, or riding his bike. He usually brings a camera with him and loves to write about his adventures when he returns home. ANNE BREWER lives in Lake Placid with her fiancé, his daughter, and their dog Juni. She is an avid outdoor sports enthusiast, kayaker, hiker, skier, photographer, and traveler. She has a passion for Central and South America and enjoys visiting places that are off the beaten path. Anne earned a degree in International Business and Communications from SUNY Brockport. In addition to being the Managing Editor for LOCALadk, Anne guides for Adventures in Good Company, and operates her own summer business; Placid Waters Kayaking. LISA SCOTT SCOTT MIEROP is the Founder of LOCALadk Magazine and a long time Adirondack native, visiting since 1969 and living within the Blue Line for the past 14 years. After a long career in the corporate world of marketing and sales, he escaped. He's an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoys mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking and skiing, and he has been an alpine racing coach at NYSEF and National Sports Academy. He's also a pilot and loves to fly. He devotes the majority of his time to LOCALadk Magazine, and can often be seen with his black & tan Dachsund, Gary.
