Fall into Winter | LOCALadk Andy ANDY JOHNSTONE hails from Saranac Lake and found the four years spent outside the blue line at Syracuse University to be plenty. After graduating with a degree in magazine journalism and environmental geography, he returned to the area and spent two winters working at the Olympic Jumping Complex before moving on to wilderness therapy for at-risk teens. He's an avid snowboarder, hiker, and loves to see the world around him through a camera lens. He now lives with his wife in Keene Valley where he's impatiently waiting for the snow to fall. LORI FITZGERALD is currently the Director of Marketing and Brand Management at the High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid. Lori grew up in Burnt Hills, NY and lived and worked in NYC until 2005. She spent most of her career in marketing but also in retail as a manger at Saks Fifth Avenue as well as owning her own flower shop. She moved to Lake Placid in 2010 and when not working enjoys skiing and hiking. When asked how she likes living in Lake Placid, she says "I love it". LORI Phil WYNDE KATE REESE and TAMMY LOEWY met in 2001 while working at The Cliffhanger Cafe in Keene Valley. Sharing a passion for healthy, delicious food and love of the outdoors, they instantly became friends. In the spring of 2004 they opened Green Goddess Foods, an organic and locally sourced prepared foods business. They were original members of the Lake Placid Farmer's Market, and they retailed their food at locally owned markets throughout the North Country. Catering and Cooking & Wellness classes are two other services they have offered since their business's inception. In 2007 they purchased the Natural Food Store in Lake Placid and changed the name to Green Goddess Natural Foods. In January 2013 they expanded and re-opened their store in its current location at 2051 Saranac Ave. The store now includes The Scape Cafe, Deli, and Catering Service. Reese holds a BS in Holistic Nutrition and offers nutrition counseling services, while Loewy manages the cafe and catering aspects of the business. The mission of Green Goddess is to provide healthy and delicious organic and local foods to North Country residents and visiting customers. & WYNDE Ed ED MCNEIL is a conservationist, ocean sailor, pilot, airplane builder, and filmmaker. His many lifetime achievements include, Conservation: Chair, Adirondack Nature Conservancy, 1994-2001; Trustee, Adirondack Nature Conservancy, 19902011; Trustee, Nature Conservancy New York State Board, 1998-2010; President, The Northern Forest Atlas Foundation. Sailing: Life member of Joshua Slocum Society. Aviation: Seaplane pilot and builder; Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Board of Visitors; Former Chair, Seaplane Pilots Foundation. He spends large amounts of time in the North Country outdoors trying to compensate for his appetite. When he's lucky, his writing appears in places like Esquire and The London Telegraph. His novel, American Youth, was published by Random House in 2007 and has been translated into eight foreign languages. He lives with his wife and two kids in Canton where he teaches writing and dabbles in livestock. TAMMY MICHAEL MICHAEL GREEN has been traveling and exploring the Adirondacks for most of his life. His family first came to the Adirondacks in 1916, as loggers and butchers. During his time in the Blue Line he has spent several years working for outdoor sport outfitters and can still be found daily in his canoe, kayak, or mountain bike. In his free time he enjoys researching Adirondack history. Michael has spent time as a bicycle mechanic, member of the US forest service, and UN Delegate traveling the world as an advocate for conservation and environmental stewardship. As a recent Northeastern University graduate, Michael continues to research climate change policy in his search for solutions to our largest problem. LOCALadk Magazine Fall into Winter 2013 5
