Maple Weekends
By LOCALadk Staff
"Sweet", "sticky", "pancakes", "yummy", "trees", are the
responses given when I asked some young kids what was
the first thing they thought of when they heard the word
"maple." New York State is second in maple production
only to Vermont. We produce over 300,000 gallons per
year and the Adirondacks play an important role in this
production.
The New York State Maple Producers Association is
hosting Maple Weekends this March during the last
two weekends of the month, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
This will be a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of
activities for the whole family. Area businesses will also
be participating in a number of maple related events and
tastings.
Community involvement is growing in the Lake Placid area thanks to Mike Farrell, the Director of Cornell University's Uihlein
Forest. Through his vision, passion for maple syrup, and job with Cornell, he has teamed up with the Shipman Youth Center to
involve young people in the community in gathering sap, which is then processed into maple syrup. Folks in Tupper Lake are also
encouraged to collect sap and bring it to the Wild Center for processing. In return you will be given 50% of the syrup created.
The NY Maple Association and the village of Lake Placid are hosting a Maple Weekend on the last weekend of March, please visit
