LOCALadk | Gear We Use 34 LOCALadk Magazine Spring 2014 Kahtoola Microspikes If you recreate in the Adirondacks during the winter and early spring, we recommend investing in some type of ice traction system for your feet. This winter gave us a great opportunity to try spikes due to the frequent icy conditions we endured. At times it was a challenge to walk the dog or even get the mail. We field tested Microspikes from Kahtoola which are described as an ice traction system that is easily worn over most boots and can be tossed in a pack or a pocket. The top half is made of rubber that should snugly fit over your boots and the bottom is a series of small chains and metal spikes that give you the traction needed. They work great on flat icy trails as well as steep mountain hiking and the level of confidence you have with the spikes is what sold me on the idea of Microspikes. Kahtoola is sold in many of the Adirondack outdoor shops and is a product that we highly recommend.
