Summer 2017 LOCALadk Magazine 39 LOCALadk FORE So, where to play? For those who already appreciate the game, there's no better place to play than the Adirondack North Country. The signature courses here were designed by some of the greats: Robert Trent Jones, Donald Ross, John Van Kleek, Walter Hagen, Seymour Dunn, Alex Findlay, and Alistair Mackenzie, who also designed Augusta National and Cypress Point. And history buffs will enjoy the fact that some of these courses have been around for more than 100 years. There must be a reason they've been popular for more than a century, eh? Here's a list of some of the courses in the region, for your convenience. The 36 championship holes at the Malone Golf Club East and West courses are longtime favorites for regional players and groups, and they're just a pitch and a putt away in Canada. Located a bit west of Malone in Brushton, this 18-hole course is fairly new. The original 9 holes were completed in 1995, and the front 9 were finished in 2005. • This 18 hole mountain course features tree-lined fairways and a wilderness backdrop. Glimpses of Big Tupper Lake and the surrounding mountains are spectacular! The word "immaculate" comes to mind when you play here. This course is known for its fast and true bent grass greens. Located in Ray Brook, this inviting and fun 9-hole course doesn't require a tee-time reservation. This beautiful 18-hole course is perched on the shores of beautiful Lake Placid, and features a number of narrow, challenging, tree-lined fairways. This historic location includes a classic 18-hole links course, the 18-hole mountain course, and a pristine 9-hole course with 7 par 3s and two par 4s! A popular town-owned layout, the course is named for Lake Placid native Craig Wood, who was the winner of the Masters Tournament in 1941, and the US Open, 21 PGA Tour events, and a member of 3 US Ryder Cup teams.
