Summer 2017 LOCALadk Magazine 5 LOCALadk Rituals - we have them for every season. In the fall we tune our skis so we are ready for the first real snow. In the spring we stow the skis and pull out the bikes and boats. And many who enjoy summer in the Adirondacks have their own particular summer rituals, too. For some, the summer ritual might involve planting a garden or readying a set of golf clubs. But one particular ritual that is a very big part of the Adirondack tradition is the opening and closing of seasonal camps. For generations, sea- sonal camps have played a major role in how many families spend their summer months. My family has owned a seasonal camp for over 40 years and each spring I look forward to the process of opening camp. A successful opening depends of course on how well you closed camp in the fall (another ritual). We have instructions for draining the pipes, winterizing boats, pulling the dock, and mouse proofing the camp. The moment of truth comes when you turn on the water and listen for silence, as opposed to the sound of water spraying out of a broken pipe. Seasonal change keeps things interesting and allows us to appreciate what is unique about each month in the Adiron- dacks. Summer is fresh food from the garden, boating on the lakes, music in the park, drinks on the deck, ice cream, late sunsets, bbqs, and cool morning hikes. Embrace the changing seasons we are blessed with, while enjoying your favorite summer ritual, whatever that may be. This issue LOCALadk's Keeping It LOCAL campaign will be donating to MAC's Safe Ride. Summer is a popular time for parties and we encourage you to drink responsibly. The mission of MAC's Safe Ride is to help prevent drinking and driving accidents by providing an alternative means of transportation to individuals of all ages. MAC's Safe Ride services the Adirondack village of Old Forge and its surrounding areas, where there is no public or private transportation services available. Tupper Lake also recent- ly added this service. They provide community members and visitors a safer option to call upon in a time of need. www.macssaferide.com Also this issue we are introducing a few instagrammers who love the Adirondacks and always share their photography of life and adventure in the park. We have showcased some of their photos in our calendar section and encourage you to follow them on instagram.
