Anne Brewer 18 Up & Comer: Charlie and Henry are two young friends from Wilmington who love to mountain bike. When the only race in town was just for adults, they decided to take action. With the help of friends, family, and community support they created a successful kids race. Their ef- forts earned them special recognition as Citizens of the Year in Wilmington. 20 Azure Mountain: A Firetower Favorite: Several firetowers in the Adirondacks are turning 100 this year. Azure Mountain Friends have planned a party to help celebrate and you are invited. Come hike Azure this summer and enjoy a gorgeous view. 22 Going Solar with Apex Solar Power: The rise in use of solar power in the Adirondacks is a positive move towards harnessing renewable energy. We are seeing the growth of solar use in some communities and reached out to Apex Solar for answers about the benefits of this energy source and steps to take toward going solar. 24 Uniquely Adirondack: Sailing in the Adirondacks has a deep and meaningful history in one small lake in particular. The Idem is a sailboat that was designed and built in 1899. There were 12 built and today 11 of the originals are still sailing and racing during the summer months. 32 Hornbeck Boats: Peter Hornbeck began building lightweight pack canoes over 40 years ago. Chances are that if you have spent time in the Adiron- dacks you have seen a Hornbeck boat headed out to explore the beautiful waters in the Adirondacks. Today's N.Y.-licensed guides have a slightly different role than in years past but the goal of providing an unforgettable Adirondack experience is the same. 46 Epic Journey: Greenland: We spent summer solstice exploring the beauty of Greenland. Greenland is the world's largest true island and 80 percent is cov- ered by the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica. It is the least populated territory in the world. It is also beautiful and offers exciting kayaking adventures, glacier hiking, and the chance to meet some great people.
