Summer 2016 LOCALadk Magazine 8 LOCALadk Hilary Summers spent camping in the Adirondacks with her family are some of HILARY WILLIAMS' fondest childhood memories. Those early Adirondack explorations influenced the love of hiking, kayaking, and all things outdoors that she does now. The natural beauty of the mountains piqued her interest in diversity and biological sciences, helping inspire her to pursue a degree in environmental science at Clarkson University. Her passion for the environment led her and to Syracuse, where she earned her master's degree at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has continued building her career working for an environmental consulting firm. In her spare time, she always looks forward to camping out under the stars or breaking trails after a fresh snowfall. As part of the PureAdirondacks.com team, you can also find her writing about her experiences or even see her in some of the adventure videos created by her husband, Evan. Freelance writer NORAH MACHIA and her husband, freelance photographer TONY MACHIA, enjoy hiking and paddling in the Adirondacks and relaxing at the cabin they built in Old Forge. They are both graduates of Syracuse University, and while residing in Watertown, Norah and Tony started coming to the Adirondack Park more than 20 years ago with their children for camping trips at Eighth Lake. They are five-year veterans of the Adirondack Canoe Classic, with Tony and his son Nick doing the paddling, and Norah carrying out the pit crew duties, along with son Kevin and daughter Katie. Norah & Tony SPENCER MORRISSEY is an Adirondack native and to this day resides and works in the park. He works as a recreational consultant, outdoor writer, and licensed guide. Spencer is a 5-time 46er and a winter 46er and only the second person to ever bushwhack all 46 of the High Peaks. He is also a fire-tower challenger completer, a finisher of the Adirondack 100-highest, and is in the pursuit of climbing all the named peaks in the Adirondack Park (currently at 855 of 1751). Spencer is a published author with titles; "The Other 54," "Adirondack Trail Runner," and "Adirondack Trail Skier," with other titles always in progress. Spencer Retaining his sense of wonder and awe way into his prime, licensed guide MIKE KELSEY has long since learned to view the backcountry Adirondacks as his playground. To him boulders become jungle gyms, overhead branches monkey bars, fallen trees balance beams, and winter hillsides a commandment to sled. His article on the Adirondack Park's best natural water slides begins on page 41. Visit his adventure blog at www.MikeKelseyAdventures.com and his YouTube channel at www.FollowMikeKelsey.com to share in his other outdoor playtime. Mike Tammy & Wynde WYNDE KATE REESE and TAMMY LOEWY received the 2016 NY State Small Business Person(s) of the Year award as well as the NYS Business of Excellence award in 2010. They met in 2001 while working at a vegetarian restaurant in Keene Valley, and instantly became friends. Sharing a passion for healthy food and a love of the outdoors, they merged their expertise in 2004 by creating Green Goddess Foods. Pioneers of the Adirondack Farm to Table movement, they were vendors at the first Lake Placid Farmer's Market, where they sold prepared foods using seasonal ingredients to give consumers ideas on what to do with local produce. In 2007 they expanded into a brick and mortar business by opening Green Goddess Natural Foods in Lake Placid. In 2013, they expanded their offerings and reopened in their current location at 2051 Saranac Ave. The store includes a cafe, deli, nutrition counseling and catering services, and offers Veggiecation TM classes in local schools.
