41 Fall 2016 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk Lean–to Challenge This new challenge is about experiencing the wilderness for more than a day. There are three different levels with this chal- lenge: the regular challenge: overnight in 5 different lean-tos in five different wilderness areas. Hike to three and paddle to two. The second level is a winter challenge, completed between December 21 and March 20:. snowshoe or ski to five different wilderness areas and spend the night. The last challenge is the Ultra: complete the above two and then add 5 more, 3 hiking and 2 paddling for a total of 15 nights in 15 different lean-tos. 29er Hikes The four criteria are that the hike must have a vertical rise of at least 1,000 feet, must be less than 9 miles round trip, great view, and use maintained and marked trails. 250 + Miles in the High Peaks Wilderness** Hike all 78 trails inside the High Peaks Wilderness Area. This chal- lenge involves hiking tens of thousands of vertical feet and tra- verses some of the most remote country in the Park. To date, only one person has completed this challenge for the patch. **Experienced hikers only. Kids on the Trail-Adirondack Mountain Club A challenge designed to encourage hiking with kids. This chal- lenge was started in 1998 and is based on the book Kids on the Trail! Hiking with Children in the Adirondacks by Rose Rivezzi and David Trithart. The challenge includes 8 sections of the Adirondacks and lists 62 different hikes. To receive the official patch you must complete at least two hikes from each section for a total of sixteen hikes. Hamilton County Waterfall and Wildlife Challenge These two challenges are specifically designed for families to en- joy.
